What You Need To Know About Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

The nose is the central part of the human face; therefore, facial expression largely depends on its shape. The purpose of nose surgery is to correct the shape and size of the nose. It is possible:

To reduce the whole nose;
To reduce or remove the hump of the nose;
To reshape the nasal tip (to make it thinner, reduce, raise, etc.);
To change the shape of the nostrils.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours on average. Two operation techniques can be used for correction of nasal deformities:

In closed rhinoplasty, incisions positioned inside the nostrils, so the scars remain invisible after the surgery.
In open rhinoplasty, an incision made in the area of the nasal columella, which extended in the mucosa of both the nostrils. After the surgery, a tiny scar, a few millimetres in length, remains in the area of the nasal columella.

Rhinoplasty can be done to correct a structural deformation (a bump or a hook), the nasal tip, and deviated septum as well. After the surgery, the surgeon may place special nasal packing inside the nose, i.e. the pieces of gauze, which removed on the first or second day following the surgery.

What Should Be Known After Surgery?

The sutures are not removed from the nasal mucosa; they dissolve by themselves;
Following the open rhinoplasty approach, the sutures from the nasal columella are removed after 7 days;
Bruising occurring after the surgery may remain up to 3 weeks;
Following a complete nose surgery, a special splint of the nose is worn for 10–12 days;
For the first 2 months after the surgery, the patient should refrain from wearing glasses as it can cause displacement of not completely healed nasal bones and alter the shape of the nose.
