Frequently Asked Questions

What is gastric plication surgery?

Gastric bypass is a restrictive procedure that shrinks the size of the stomach by making large folds in the stomach's lining. This is done to reduce the amount of food and calories consumed. It helps to reduce weight.

What are the risks of gastric plication surgery?

There is a relatively low risk of complications associated with the procedure, the most significant side effects reported include nausea and vomiting, which usually last about a week after the surgery. If you consider this type of surgery, it is highly recommended to consult your doctor before the procedure and ask him about all risks involved and how to avoid them.

What can I expect during gastric plication surgery?

The gastric plication surgery is conducted through a laparoscopy, which means that small incisions are made in the patient's abdomen, avoiding open surgery. During the procedure, which takes from 40 minutes to two hours, surgeons reduce the size of the stomach by folding the stomach's lining inside itself.

What is the recovery time after gastric plication surgery?

The recovery process begins almost immediately after your surgery as you gradually start to get used to your new way of eating. This begins with a two-week liquid diet. Liquid diet might include water, milk, fruit juice and sherbet. The following few weeks will involve thicker liquids, such as soup with some vegetables, and later you can try yoghurts and fruits. After that, you will be able to eat all foods in reduced amounts. Most surgeons recommend that you opt for nutritionally dense foods and avoid carbohydrates and fat.

What can I expect after gastric plication surgery?

Gastric plication does not cause decreased absorption of nutrients or bypass your intestines. Anyway, you may need to take vitamins or minerals after your surgery because you won’t be eating as much as you used to, and this can result in a shortfall of essential nutrients. Discuss this with your surgeon before surgery.
