Frequently Asked Questions

What is gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass is a surgery used to decrease a stomach and a partially bypass their small intestine. This is done to reduce the amount of food and calories consumed. It helps to reduce weight.

What are the risks of gastric bypass surgery?

The most common complications after gastric bypass surgery include vitamin and mineral deficiency, dehydration, gallstones, kidney stones, and hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
If you consider this type of surgery, it is highly recommended to consult your doctor before the procedure and ask him about all risks involved and how to avoid them.

How can I prepare for gastric bypass surgery?

It is simple; you’ll need to go through an evaluation process that involves dietitians, psychologists, and surgeons to determine if gastric bypass is for you.
It’s essential to follow physician’s recommendations and directions when preparing for the surgery. He may restrict your diet, get you started exercising, and suggest that you avoid the use of cigarettes if you are smoking.

What can I expect during gastric bypass surgery?

During gastric bypass surgery, you will be placed under general anaesthesia. Your stomach will be stapled across the top and will be reduced to about the size of an egg. Then the surgeon cuts your small intestine and attaches part of it directly to the newly created pouch in your stomach.

What is the recovery time after gastric bypass surgery?

The recovery time after gastric bypass is around six months. It is so long because your body has to adapt to the rapid weight loss and change in nutrition habits.
You can expect to lose 40-60 percent of your body weight within the first two years, of course if you maintain healthy nutrition and exercise regularly.

What can I expect after gastric bypass surgery?

After the operation, your doctor may not allow you to eat for one or two days to facilitate the healing process. For the next 12 weeks, you’ll have a very strict diet, which begins with liquids and later allows you to eat regular foods. The gastric bypass will not only help you to lose weight, but also with other conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The results of gastric bypass surgery largely depend on your ability, and commitment, to make changes in your nutrition and exercise habits.
