What You Need To Know About Facelift Surgery

Facial aging is a natural process that results in sagging skin, drooping eyebrows, and accumulation of fat deposits under the eyes. Deep creases develop around the corners of the nose. The chin area loses its attractive appearance when wrinkles develop around the jaw line and on the neck. The nose looks elongated, and multiple fine wrinkles appear on the face.

Facelift surgery continues to be the most effective method to rejuvenate one’s face and to look more freshly and youthfully. A facelift cannot stop the aging process, but it can rejuvenate facial contours.

During this procedure, wrinkles on the forehead can be smoothed out, the shape of eyebrows can be changed, the skin in the middle part of the face can be tighten, the sagging lower half of the face can be lifted up, or the beauty of the neck can be restored by the removal of excess fat.

The best candidates for this surgery are women or men whose face and neck show visible signs of aging, but skin still retains some elasticity and facial bone structure is well-defined. Mostly individuals aged 40–60 years undergo this surgery.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The surgery performed under general anaesthesia, and it takes around 4–6 hours to complete depending on the extent of the procedure.
Operative incisions vary depending on the gender of a patient, haircut, hairline, age, scars following previous surgeries, and other factors. The incisions made within the hairline and in natural lines around the ears to minimize visible scarring. One more incision is typically placed in a natural skin crease beneath the chin to remove excess fat.
Depending on a surgery technique, the surgeon can perform a so-called skin-only facelift or two-layer facelift. Facial tissues tightened by placing stitches. The skin is pulled up and back, repositioned, and the excess skin removed.
After the surgery, the head and the face specifically bandaged.
If drooping brows are present, a brow lift can be made with a facelift. A facelift is often performed in conjunction with fat grafting to improve facial contours and to correct deeper wrinkles.

What Should Be Known After Surgery?

  • Following the surgery, facial swelling and bruising are usual. During the first two days, maximum swelling occurs; therefore, it is very important to apply cold compresses to the face regularly.

  • After 3-4 days, swelling begins to subside. Usually, facial swelling and bruising remain for up to 3–4 weeks.

  • The stitches removed at the fifth-seventh day after the surgery.

  • The final result of the surgery seen after 4–6 months after surgery when swelling subsides completely and surgical scars mature.
